Saint Lucia is bucking regional tourism trends and positioning itself for one of its most significant periods of growth, with tourism officials reporting strong gains across key international markets while several competing destinations face declining visitor numbers.
Speaking at the Piton Global Awards, Chief Executive Officer of the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority, Louis Lewis credited travel advisors around the world for helping fuel the island’s continued tourism success and expanding its global appeal.
“We are trending upwards, and that is the place where we want to be,” Lewis said, noting that Saint Lucia continues to record growth in the crucial United States market even as some destinations across the region experience softer demand.
Lewis emphasized that the island’s performance is not accidental, pointing to the continued influence of travel advisors despite the rise of artificial intelligence and online booking platforms.
“AI does not replace the relevance of travel agents,” he said. “Travel advisors provide authentic testimony about destinations and offer support that technology simply cannot replicate.”
The positive momentum extends beyond the U.S. market. Saint Lucia has also recorded double-digit growth in visitor arrivals from Canada, a trend tourism officials attribute to strong partnerships with travel advisors who continue to promote the island as a premier Caribbean destination.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom market, which has faced challenges linked to tourism product changes and airlift constraints, is beginning to rebound. Lewis expressed confidence that visitor arrivals from the UK will continue to improve before the end of 2026.
The tourism chief also revealed ambitious expansion plans that could reshape the sector over the next 18 months. Hotel room capacity is expected to increase by approximately 20 percent, creating new opportunities for investment, employment and visitor spending across the island.
As part of its long-term strategy, Saint Lucia is also broadening its tourism brand beyond its globally recognized romance market by strengthening its wellness tourism offerings and developing more immersive community-based experiences.
“We are not moving away from romance, but we are adding wellness,” Lewis explained, noting that modern travelers are increasingly seeking authentic experiences that support personal well-being and deeper cultural connections.
Among the projects planned is a major underwater sculpture park featuring approximately 300 sculptures designed to showcase Saint Lucia’s history, culture and commitment to environmental sustainability.
Lewis described the award-winning travel advisors honored at the Piton Global Awards as the “best of the best,” thanking them for their contribution to the island’s tourism success and economic development.
“You have assisted in changing lives, contributing to the economic development of Saint Lucia and helping us attain a higher standard of living,” he said.
The Piton Global Awards brought together leading travel professionals from Saint Lucia’s major source markets as the destination continues to build momentum and prepare for what tourism officials believe could be a transformative period of growth.
