Caye Caulker restaurant confrontation escalates from beer bottle to blade

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A Tuesday evening on Crocodile Street in Caye Caulker turned tense enough for a licensed firearm to come out of storage.

A 51 year old restaurant manager told police he was outside his workplace around 5pm speaking with customers and staff when he spotted a man on a golf cart parked in front of the business.

He said he knew the man from around the island and, given past behaviour, asked him politely to move on.

The man stood up with a beer bottle in his hand and swung it at his face. The manager ducked, pushed him, got him into a choke hold, took the bottle and released him.

He then went inside, secured his unloaded 9mm and its magazine behind the bar, and walked back out.

That is when he says he saw the same man approaching the gate holding a silver knife roughly five inches long.

He went back for the firearm, loaded it, set it on the counter and told the man not to come closer. The man shouted at him and eventually left.

The manager says he never pointed the weapon at him. Police recorded a statement.

Are situations like this getting more common on the island?
