*The closure of Spirit Airlines has sparked an emotional response from former Chad Johnson, who says the budget airline played a meaningful role in his financial journey during his football career.
After more than three decades in operation, the airline ceased service, leaving behind a loyal customer base that included both everyday travelers and high-profile figures.
According to Essentially Sports, Johnson took to social media to express gratitude for the airline’s affordability and consistency over the years. Reflecting on its impact, he wrote, “Forever indebted to you, your services since 1992 & cost-efficient prices helped me save money throughout the years, always getting me to my destination safely @spiritairlines
”. His message highlighted how the airline’s low fares, often significantly cheaper than competitors, helped him manage expenses even as a professional athlete.

Founded in 1992, Spirit Airlines built its reputation around budget-friendly travel across the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Despite its popularity, the company struggled financially in recent years, losing more than $2.5 billion since 2020 and filing for bankruptcy protection twice before ultimately shutting down. External pressures, including a global fuel crisis tied to geopolitical conflict, further strained its operations.
Johnson had long defended the airline’s reliability, even when it became the subject of online jokes. In a 2022 post, he wrote, “These Spirit jokes are quite funny. But they’ve always gotten me to my destination on time w/ no delays or cancellations, unlike other airlines that have passengers stranded right now
.”
Following the shutdown, his tone shifted from gratitude to disbelief. Reacting to the news, Johnson posted, “How am I supposed to pay bills knowing I’ll never be able to fly @SpiritAirlines again?
”, blending humor with frustration.
