*DC Studios has released the first teaser trailer for “Clayface,” offering an unsettling glimpse into what is being described as a bold, horror-driven shift for the franchise. The film marks a darker turn for the DC Universe, leaning heavily into psychological and body horror elements rarely seen in its previous entries.
Directed by James Watkins, the film stars Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, a fictional actor whose life spirals into something far more disturbing. The teaser introduces a grim tone, including imagery of Hagen injured in a hospital bed and moments that hint at his transformation into a shapeshifting villain.
“Clayface” is positioned as a significant tonal departure from recent DC projects, following more traditional superhero storytelling seen in films like Superman. The new footage emphasizes horror over heroics, signaling a willingness by the studio to explore a broader range of genres within its cinematic universe.
The film’s official logline states, “‘Clayface’ unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.” The story centers on Hagen’s personal unraveling as ambition and transformation collide with devastating consequences.
Written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with a story by Flanagan, the project brings together voices known for psychological storytelling. It also features a supporting cast that includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan.
Produced by Matt Reeves, James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Lynn Harris, the film represents DC Studios’ first major entry into horror territory. As one of the early installments in the evolving DC Universe, it also follows the success of “Superman” and precedes future projects that may return to a lighter tone.
