Coach Ayala hails Vipers’ response after ending winless run

Vipers SC head coach John “Ayala” Luyinda has praised his players for their response after ending a three-game winless run with a 2-0 victory over Lugazi in the Uganda Premier League.

The Venoms returned to winning ways on Friday, putting behind them a difficult spell that had seen them suffer consecutive defeats against Mbarara City and URA FC after settling for a draw with Police FC.

The victory was particularly important for Vipers, who had struggled in front of goal in their previous three outings.

However, they showed signs of improvement against Lugazi, scoring twice while keeping a clean sheet to get their campaign back on track.

Speaking after the game, Ayala acknowledged the difficult period the team had endured but was pleased with the players’ determination to turn things around.

“Of course, it was a hard game. Remember, we had gone three games without winning, which is quite a long spell. I thank the boys for doing everything it took to return to winning ways,” he said.

The tactician identified poor finishing as one of the major shortcomings during their difficult run but was encouraged by the improvement in attack against Lugazi.

“Failure to convert our chances had been letting us down. At least today, there was some improvement. We had struggled to score in the last three games, but now we have scored twice,” he added.

Defensively, Vipers also showed improvement, having conceded in their previous two matches before shutting out Lugazi.

“We didn’t concede because in the last two games, we conceded. I think we are good. It’s a good start,” Ayala noted.

The Vipers coach is now keen to see his charges build on the victory and carry the momentum into their subsequent fixtures.

“Maybe if we can build on that in the next games, then I think we shall be an improved side,” he concluded.

The result offers Vipers an opportunity to regain momentum as they seek to remain competitive in the race for the Uganda Premier League title.

The international break comes in as a blessing, allowing the new gaffer to put together the pieces and find a way of bringing his element into the team.
