*Chaos erupted at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night, April 25, 2026, when shots were fired during the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) Dinner. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance were swiftly evacuated from the venue as Secret Service agents scrambled to secure the area.
The incident marks the first major security breach at a WHCA dinner in decades and echoes the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan at the same hotel.
What Happened
Around 8:40 p.m. EDT, an armed suspect charged a security checkpoint near the main ballroom where the dinner was underway. The suspect fired at least one shot, sending attendees diving under tables and Secret Service agents rushing toward the head table.
Agents yelled “shots fired” as they drew their weapons. President Trump and other VIPs were quickly escorted off stage and out of the venue.
One Secret Service agent was shot at close range but was saved by a bulletproof vest. Officials report the agent is in good condition. The suspect was subdued and taken into custody alive. Law enforcement sources say he acted alone.

The Suspect
Authorities have identified the gunman as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. According to reports, Allen was a guest at the Hilton and had a room at the hotel. He was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.
Allen’s background is surprising to those who knew him. He worked as a part-time teacher in test preparation and tutoring, and also as a video game developer. He holds an undergraduate degree from Caltech (2017) and a master’s degree from CSU Dominguez Hills (2025).
In Torrance, a suburb of Los Angeles, where Allen lived in a modest two-story tract home, news crews and neighbors gathered Saturday night as police helicopters circled overhead. FBI agents later arrived, joining local police outside the residence.
“This is a quiet neighborhood, lots of retired LAPD,” James Costello, 53, a prop master who knows the Allen family, told the NY Times. “That’s why we moved here. We were told it was super, super safe.”
In Allen’s driveway, two Hondas were parked beside a bright blue motor scooter that neighbors said he used to run errands.
Aftermath and Response
President Trump held a press conference from the White House later that night. He praised law enforcement for their swift action and called the suspect a “sick person” and a “lone wolf whack job.” Trump also noted that raids were conducted on the suspect’s California home.
No other injuries were reported among attendees or protectees. The dinner was disrupted and will be rescheduled.
The investigation is ongoing, led by the Secret Service, FBI, and Metropolitan Police Department. Charges are expected to include firearms violations and assault on federal officers.
A Night of Chaos
For attendees, the evening turned from celebration to terror in seconds. Many described diving under tables as agents shouted commands. The swift evacuation of the president and other dignitaries likely prevented further casualties.
This incident will undoubtedly lead to a major security review of future WHCA dinners and similar high-profile events in Washington, D.C.
As of early Sunday morning, the investigation continues. The story is developing rapidly, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
