From the sunny island of Tenerife, Dactah Chando opens this latest set with Mercy, with slow, heavy roots dub beneath the singer’s pleading delivery of lyrics that are sadly all too relevant these days of war and pollution. Conforme ups the mood, brassy and upbeat, very late seventies Bob Marley inflected, though the lyrics are in Spanish this time (as they are on all but one of the remaining tracks) and there is a rap and a soaring rock guitar break too. So yes, the reset is that Dactah has returned to (more or less) straight-forward reggae tunes in classic seventies style, and he’s certainly sounding good.

The album, his twelfth studio set, also marks his twentieth anniversary in the music industry. He has gone for an organic, analogue sound, restoring the human element to the music, with all the musicians live in the studio, and it makes a strong and powerful statement, and there are some lovely little surprise elements, such as the jazzy flute breaks on Enemies.

Guía is heavy dub again – and extremely effective. Apart from the Spanish lyrics, Origen takes the listener back to the late 70s again, to some small Kingston studio thick with weed smoke and producing classic roots reggae (nice melodica here too). Roots, also in Spanish, nods to the early 80s of Black Uhuru, with a vocal a little reminiscent of the great Mykal Roze. The positive Times a plea for unity and peace, is the album’s other song in English.

So there is plenty to recommend on the dozen tracks of this release, even if you don’t speak Spanish. If you do, you’ll appreciate the sentiments on offer on this album, If you don’t, just let the rhythms and classic arrangements carry you along.
