Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has described the public share offering of his Nigerian oil refinery as a historic moment for the continent, as investors get the opportunity to buy into one of Africa’s biggest industrial projects.
Speaking at the Nigerian Exchange in Lagos as the initial public offering went live, Dangote said the transaction was significant not only for the refinery and Nigeria’s capital market but for Africans who believe in the continent’s economic potential.
The offering is expected to be the largest IPO in African history. According to Africanews, investors can participate with a minimum purchase of 10 shares, while the company aims to raise about US$1.6 billion.
The proceeds are intended to support expansion of the refinery, with plans to increase its production capacity and strengthen its position in the global energy market.
Dangote said opening ownership to smaller investors would allow more ordinary Africans to participate in the long-term value created by the business. Investment banker Aigboje Imoukhuede said the offering could also broaden wealth creation and deepen participation in Nigeria’s capital markets.
Neo Mooki, chairperson of the Botswana Stock Exchange, said the listing could inspire a new generation of African entrepreneurs by demonstrating that African companies can build businesses of global significance.
The offer is scheduled to close on October 13, 2026.
