MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Fierce fighting between two clan militias continued for a third consecutive day on Saturday in the town of Jalalaqsi in central Somalia’s Hiran region, forcing most residents to flee and leaving the town largely deserted except for armed combatants exchanging heavy weapons fire.
The renewed clashes have triggered a worsening humanitarian situation, with videos circulating on social media showing militias from both sides, as well as civilians, setting fire to homes belonging to people displaced by the conflict. Those involved in the destruction claim the houses belong to members of the rival clan who had fled the fighting.
According to reports from the area, days of intense violence have emptied much of Jalalaqsi, as residents escaped the town in search of safety while the warring sides continued to battle using heavy weaponry.
Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones in the latest round of bloodshed. He called on both sides to embrace peace, urging them to halt hostilities immediately and prevent further loss of life.
Somalia’s federal government and authorities in Hirshabelle State also appealed for an end to the fighting. Security forces from Hirshabelle, alongside Djiboutian peacekeepers, maintain a presence in Jalalaqsi. However, despite their calls for calm, both administrations have yet to make any tangible effort to separate the rival militias or bring the clashes to an end.
Meanwhile, reports have emerged alleging that the Jalalaqsi local administration, led by a man known as Nur Dhere, is directly involved in the conflict by supporting one of the warring sides and further fueling the inter-clan violence.
Residents and observers describe the ongoing conflict as the most severe inter-clan fighting witnessed in Jalalaqsi in many decades, raising fears of further displacement, destruction and loss of life unless urgent steps are taken to stop the hostilities.
