(AURN News) — Voting in the 2026 midterm elections begins today in Virginia, South Dakota and Minnesota, 46 days before Election Day on Nov. 3.
Illinois follows on Sept. 24, when early voting begins at election authority offices, while many other states begin early voting later in the fall.
The opening of early voting offers an early look at voter participation ahead of a midterm election that will determine control of Congress. All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are up for election.
In Virginia, there’s also some real drama behind the scenes over the state’s congressional map.
The state is using its previous congressional map after the Virginia Supreme Court voided the results of an April special election that would have allowed a Democratic-backed congressional map to take effect.
Early turnout in these states, including Virginia, will offer one of the first measures of voter participation ahead of Election Day.
