Eddie Murphy Reflects on Family as He Welcomes New Granddaughter Ari Skye

*Family has taken on even greater meaning for Eddie Murphy following the birth of his granddaughter, Ari Skye, the first child of Eric Murphy and Jasmin Lawrence, E! Online reports.

The actor spoke about the milestone while attending the American Film Institute Achievement Award Ceremony on April 18, where he confirmed the couple had recently become parents. Murphy used the moment to share his perspective on raising children, stressing that actions carry more weight than spoken guidance.

“Oh, you don’t give advice like that,” he explained. “You know, your kids don’t go by your advice. Your kids go by the example you set. They watch you.” Murphy added, “The stuff you be saying, they don’t even pay that s–t no mind. They watch and see what you do. So, I don’t give a lot of advice.”

For Murphy, the significance of family outweighs professional accomplishments. “My legacy to me isn’t my work,” he said. “My legacy to me is my children. So, that’s my legacy.”

Eric, 36, and Jasmin, 30, had previously shared that they were expecting their first child, doing so months after tying the knot. Jasmin’s father, Martin Lawrence, marked the occasion with a heartfelt message. “What a blessing to start the day!” he wrote.

“My heart is overflowing with love and gratitude after the announcement of my first grandchild!” Martin continued, “Watching [Jasmin] and [Eric] begin this journey into parenthood means everything to me. Family is everything—and this moment is nothing less than a blessing from God. Welcome to the next generation!”
