Fantan Mojah has passed away
Reggae has lost one of its fiercest conscious voices. Fantan Mojah passed away on July 15, 2026, at the age of 49, bringing an end to a remarkable journey that inspired reggae lovers around the world. His passing leaves a huge gap in the roots reggae community, but his music and message will continue to echo through generations.
Born Owen Moncrieffe in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, Fantan Mojah grew up listening to reggae greats like Burning Spear and Jacob Miller. Their influence stayed with him as he moved to Kingston, where he learned the ropes with the legendary Kilamanjaro sound system. Before long, Fantan Mojah had become one of the strongest voices of the 2000s roots revival, proudly representing the Bobo Ashanti tradition every step of the way.
He didn’t look or sound like anyone else. His turban became part of his identity, and the backpack he carried everywhere symbolized the struggles people face in everyday life. It wasn’t an act. Fantan Mojah lived the message he brought to the microphone.
His debut album, Hail The King, released in 2005 through Downsound Records, announced his arrival in a big way. The title track remains one of the standout roots anthems of the era and helped introduce his unmistakable voice to reggae fans across the globe.
For many, though, Hungry became the song that defined him. Its honest lyrics painted a powerful picture of hardship, determination, and survival, speaking directly to people facing difficult realities. He followed it with standout tracks like Nuh Build Great Man, alongside Jah Cure, and Corruption, proving he could combine conscious lyrics with the energy and drive of dancehall without ever losing his roots.
On stage, Fantan Mojah was unforgettable. His performances were packed with energy, emotion, and deep spirituality. Every show felt like more than entertainment. It was a message, a testimony, and a reminder that reggae still has the power to uplift and unite.
One thing never changed throughout his career. Fantan Mojah stayed true to himself. He never watered down his beliefs or changed his message to fit the mainstream. That honesty earned him respect from reggae fans everywhere.
Although Fantan Mojah is no longer with us, his voice continues to live through every conscious anthem, every heavy bassline, and every listener who finds strength in his music.
Rest in power, King. Your light shines on.
