By Zoila Palma: Yucatec Maya leader and educator Felicita Cantun of Yo Creek, Belize, has been honored with the Don Elijio Panti Award for her outstanding efforts to protect, preserve and develop indigenous knowledge and cultural traditions.
Cantun, widely regarded as a “Culture Warrior,” has dedicated her work to revitalizing Maya language, traditions and spiritual practices.
She is particularly recognized for reviving the ancient Maya ball game Pok-Ta-Pok and establishing the Belizean team Ek’ Balam, which went on to become world champions. She also founded the men’s and women’s teams K’iinich Ahau and Ix-K’iinich Ahau.
Beyond the sport, Cantun is a practitioner of sacred Maya ceremonies, including the “Jeets Meek”, and continues to promote the preservation of Maya spirituality and cultural heritage.
Through her work, she has helped strengthen connections between younger generations, their ancestral traditions and the natural environment, earning recognition for her continued contribution to indigenous knowledge in Belize.
