As heavy rains bring hardship to many across South Africa, the Garden Route SPCA remains steadfast in its mission to protect vulnerable animals and support its community through every storm.
Garden Route, South Africa (13 May 2026) – Relentless rains have swept across South Africa, leaving a path of uprooted trees and devastating floods. It has been a heavy, trying time for everyone affected, from families and individuals to the many helpless animals caught in the storm.
Since last week, the Garden Route SPCA has been out in the field daily assisting community members and responding to animals affected by the severe weather conditions across the area.
Teams have monitored flooded and high-risk areas, responded to welfare complaints, assisted owners with their animals, and brought vulnerable animals in for safekeeping where needed. During this time, they have assisted numerous animals, from dogs and cats to pigs and other vulnerable animals affected by the extreme weather conditions.
“Over the past week, our staff have braved cold temperatures, heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous conditions to save animals and assist members of the public with their animals. Many of our staff members have risked their own safety while responding to emergencies, often working long hours in terrible weather conditions to make sure animals receive help,” shared Garden Route SPCA’s Megan Botha.
Due to the severity of the weather conditions, both the Garden Route and Mossel Bay SPCA branches had to close yesterday.
“While our animals remain safe, warm, and cared for, many of our staff members needed to return home to ensure the safety of their own families during the ongoing storm conditions.”
How you can help
The Garden Route SPCA would like to ask the public to please continue informing them of areas where animals may need help or where intervention may be required. Community support and communication remain critical during this time, allowing the team to reach animals faster and provide assistance where it is needed most.
“We would also greatly appreciate any donations made to the Garden Route SPCA during this difficult period to assist us in continuing our work and ensuring animals remain safe, warm, and cared for,” Megan appealed.
The Garden Route SPCA remains committed to protecting animals and supporting the community throughout these severe weather conditions. To support the organisation during this time, call 044 878 1990 or donate to the banking details below:
