Nine-month-old Mianké is still in ICU battling severe RSV and pneumonia but this weekend her family received something they desperately needed alongside medical care… proof that they are not fighting this battle alone.
Pretoria, South Africa (24 May 2026) – Three days ago, a desperate email landed in our inbox from parents sitting beside an ICU bed watching their tiny baby girl fight for breath. Today, because of you, there is a little more hope in that hospital room.
And I need to say this before anything else… thank you.
On Thursday, we shared the story of nine-month-old Mianké, a little fighter who was born as a micro-premie at just 29 weeks. Her lungs were never given enough time to fully develop, which has made every illness more dangerous and every breath more precious.
This week, things took a devastating turn when Mianké was admitted to ICU battling severe Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and pneumonia. She remains on high-flow oxygen support while doctors work to stabilise her fragile little lungs.
“A tiny baby is lying in ICU right now fighting for breath, while her parents sit beside her doing the only thing parents can do in moments like this… hoping, praying and trying not to fall apart while the machines beep around them.”
That was how the story started on Thursday.
I don’t think any of us were prepared for how deeply it would touch people.
Mianké urgently needs specialised Synagis injections to help protect her lungs from severe RSV complications. Each injection costs a staggering R17,000. Medical aid covered only the first one. Her family somehow scraped together enough for the second themselves, but they still needed another three injections, alongside growing hospital bills, specialist fees and mounting medical shortfalls.
At the time, the family had raised just over R5,000.
Today, just a few days later, Good Things Guy readers have helped raise more than R21,000.
I sat at my desk this morning crying. Happy tears.
Mianké’s next injection is now paid for. And knowing this community the way I do, I believe the rest will be too. But this update is not just about numbers or fundraising progress. It’s about the hundreds of small acts of kindness joining together to create something life-changing for one little girl and her exhausted parents. Reck Mare reached out to Good Things Guy in desperation, hoping South Africans might become the helpers during one of the hardest moments of their lives.
And you did.
You shared the story, you donated, and you sent prayers, messages and encouragement. You reminded a family sitting in ICU that they are not carrying this fear alone anymore.
“Seeing such a small baby struggle to breathe is something no parent can truly prepare for,” the family shared earlier this week.
Mianké still has a road ahead of her. The medical costs are still enormous. The fight is not over yet. But the weight feels a little lighter today because a community stepped in and turned helplessness into action.
