MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The United States Embassy in Mogadishu on Sunday said the desecration of the American flag by members of Somalia’s security forces harms relations between the United States and Somalia, while praising the Somali federal government for its swift response and accountability measures.
In a statement, the embassy said anti-American acts undermine the longstanding partnership between the two countries, noting that the United States has provided billions of dollars in assistance to Somalia and has long supported military operations against terrorist organizations that threaten both American and Somali interests.
“Anti-American acts harm our bilateral relationship. The United States has provided billions of taxpayer dollars in assistance to Somalia. Most notably, the good faith of the American people has long supported military action against terrorist organizations which threaten the United States and, most directly, target the Somali people,” the embassy said.
The embassy also welcomed the Federal Government of Somalia’s prompt response after a video circulated widely online showing individuals identified as members of the Somali Security Forces standing on and desecrating the American national flag.
“The U.S. Embassy appreciates the Federal Government of Somalia’s quick response and decisive actions following a video of individuals in the Somali Security Forces desecrating the American flag. Malfeasant actors who seek to tarnish Somalia’s relationship with the United States harm the Somali people and must continue to be held accountable,” the statement added.
The embassy’s remarks came days after the video emerged and spread widely on social media, drawing attention at a sensitive moment in U.S.-Somalia relations.
The incident comes as the United States has recently informed the African Union that it intends to end its support for United Nations logistical assistance to the peacekeeping mission in Somalia. Washington cited a lack of sufficient progress by Somali authorities on security, political stability and the transition of Somalia’s security forces to assume full responsibility for the country’s security.
On Friday, Somalia’s federal government announced that it had arrested the soldiers seen in the video, saying they would face disciplinary measures as well as legal action over their conduct.
The government said the actions captured in the footage were unacceptable, reaffirming its commitment to holding those responsible accountable.
The incident has renewed attention on the importance both governments attach to preserving their longstanding partnership as Somalia and the United States continue cooperating on counterterrorism efforts and broader initiatives aimed at strengthening Somalia’s security and stability.
