Egypt and Japan have stepped up coordination on water and climate issues in preparation for the 2026 United Nations Water Conference, including the third interactive dialogue, “Water and the Planet.”
According to Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, Minister Hani Sewilam met with Kenzo Hiroki, adviser to the Emperor of Japan on water affairs and to the Japanese prime minister’s water envoy, to discuss cooperation and conference planning.
Both sides stressed the importance of continued consultation and alignment of positions to ensure unified international messaging on water and climate. Sewilam highlighted the need to build on the outcomes of the 2023 UN Water Conference, while focusing on practical implementation mechanisms for the 2026 event.
He emphasized that water and climate initiatives must include clear, actionable frameworks to deliver tangible results. Discussions also covered the work plan for the “Water and the Planet” dialogue and ongoing Egyptian-Japanese coordination on global initiatives.
The talks reviewed preparations for an event at the Fourth Dushanbe Water Conference in Tajikistan on May 26-27, 2026, as well as a ministerial meeting of host countries and co-chairs expected in July.
The ministry added that discussions addressed participation levels and coordination with international partners and countries ahead of the 2026 conference, underscoring the shared commitment of Egypt and Japan to advancing global water and climate priorities.
