*George Foreman spent the better part of his life in Texas, but when it came time to choose a final resting place, he chose a midwestern city with almost no history in his story.
The boxing legend died March 21, 2025, at age 76 in Houston and was buried one month later at Logan Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa, a city of nearly 87,000 people situated a few miles north of the Missouri River, The Huffington Post reports.
His family recently made the journey back to Sioux City, joining Mayor Bob Scott at Foreman’s burial site for a news conference that publicly revealed the location for the first time. The grave is marked by a large monument featuring an image of Foreman as a teenager, taken from the moment he claimed Olympic gold at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. “Our father lived a life of purpose, faith and gratitude,” the family said in a statement. “To see him laid to rest in a place that brought him peace means everything to us.”
The story behind the choice goes back to one trip in 1988. That brief stop in Sioux City left a lasting impression on Foreman, one he spoke about long after returning home. When his family brought him there to be buried on April 17, 2025, they said they quickly came to understand what had drawn him to the place. Mayor Scott spoke to that enduring connection, saying “Their story is a reminder of how one place can stay with someone for a lifetime.”
Foreman’s path from that Olympic podium to the heavyweight throne was extraordinary. He claimed his first world title in 1973 with a commanding win over the then-undefeated Joe Frazier, only to fall to Muhammad Ali the following year in the legendary “Rumble in the Jungle.” Two decades later, at 45, he defeated Michael Moorer in 1994 to become the oldest heavyweight champion in history. He retired in 1997 with a 76-5 record and earned his place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003.
After hanging up his gloves, Foreman found a second career as a businessman and pitchman, with the George Foreman Grill bringing him a whole new wave of recognition. A biographical film about his life arrived in 2023. When Ali died in 2016, Foreman did not mince words about the loss. “I lost my best friend,” he told TMZ — words that spoke to a deep friendship that grew out of one of boxing’s greatest rivalries.
