Georgia Faith Leaders Call for voter mobilization to fight against Supreme Court ruling on voting rights

Today, Georgia faith leaders gathered outside of Big Bethel AME Church, in the heart of the historic Sweet Auburn neighborhood, to sound the alarm on the blatant attack against democracy by suppressing voters and diminishing the Civil Rights Movement. This comes after the Supreme Court’s decision to hollow out Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the State Election Board’s ongoing efforts to upend Georgia elections.

The Supreme Court’s decision to hollow out the Voting Rights Act is a result of a years-long effort to dismantle the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement and reduce Black representation in the United States Congress. The State Election Board – controlled by election deniers and conspiracy theorists – has pushed efforts for Georgia to abandon its current voting system for hand-marked paper ballots in the middle of the midterm elections, which they don’t have the authority to do.

During the press conference, faith leaders warned these vicious attacks on voting rights will lead to an unprecedented mobilization in Georgia this November, calling on voters to turn out.

“What can we do to make sure we protect the fundamental right to vote? Vote. Especially in this election. This midterm election is more consequential, I would argue, than any election in yesteryear,” said Dr. Jay Augustine, Senior Pastor of Big Bethel AME Church. “Why are we still talking about the 2020 election? Is it his ego? Does he need a hug? Can he not recognize that the voters of Georgia spoke and spoke loudly? […] So again, this election, I believe, is more important than any that has occurred in the past, because now all hands must be on deck to make sure people are voting in 2026 because if we don’t, we may not be able to vote at any time in the future.”

“We need for Americans, regardless of your ethnicity, regardless of party, regardless of opinion, it’s time for Americans to stand up and say, ‘I love my democracy, and I want to keep it, and whoever’s getting in the way of that is the problem, not the solution,’” said Rev. Willie “Bo” Barber II, Prospect AME Church.

“Voting matters. Your vote matters. You want to defeat what the Supreme Court has done to us? Then vote. You want to eliminate the racism that exists in our voting system? Then vote. If you want your voice to be heard, the only thing that you can do that will really count is to vote. Not just in Fulton County, but all across this state and nation,” said Rev. Timothy McDonald, Senior Pastor, First Iconium Baptist Church.
