For most US-based collegiate track and field athletes, the past few days have been transitional. Some graduated, while others are preparing for upcoming competitions. Meanwhile, a few Saint Lucian athletes competed and produced notable results.
Mya Hippolyte won the women’s 100m dash at the Huskie Classic in 11.88 seconds, her season best. A 1.3 m/s tailwind helped the Western Illinois senior achieve her fastest time since clocking 11.71 at last year’s OVC Outdoor Championships.
Kereser Augustin ran twice for Washburn University this weekend. At the Wichita State Shocker Open, she finished second in the women’s 400m in 55.66. At the Pittsburg State Almost Last Chance Meet, she placed fifth in 55.81.
Lewis University’s Cagini Pilgrim placed second in the men’s 200m at the St. Francis Fighting Chance Invite with 21.46. In the 100m, he was fourth, running 10.62 in prelims and 10.59 in the final, his second-fastest wind-legal time this year.
Among the students taking part in commencement ceremonies this past weekend were Naya Jules and Miguel Charlery. Jules, Saint Lucia’s national women’s pole vault record holder, finished her associate degree at Garden City College. Charlery earned his bachelor’s from East Stroudsburg University.
Starting Thursday, May 14, athletes will begin postseason competition. Jules is a medal contender at the junior college Division I Outdoor Championships, hosted by New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, New Mexico. She is ranked in the top 10 for javelin throw and heptathlon. She holds the 15th spot in the pole vault.
This weekend, four-year NCAA schools will hold conference championships. Over a dozen Saint Lucian athletes are expected to compete for spots at their respective national championships.
