Hon. Sarah Babirye Kityo: Former Netball president’s return to 12th Parliament, sports ranks aloft her agenda

Honorable Sarah Babirye Kityo was officially sworn in as a Member of Parliament in the 12th Parliament, representing the people of Bukoto East in Masaka city.

Hon. Kityo bounced back to the law-making house having previously served in the 10th Parliament (as youth MP for Central Uganda) but missed out in the 11th.

At the time she was out of Parliament, Hon. Babirye served as the President of Uganda Netball Federation between 2021 and 2023.

Now back in Parliament, she has vowed to remain a very solid ‘loud’ voice for Uganda’s sports industry in Parliament.

Hon. Babirye promises to fight all related injustices and push for better accountability and support for sports federations and athletes.

Addressing family members, friends and voters from Bukoto East at her residence in Maya (along Masaka road), Hon. Babirye hinted about her unequalled love for sports.

I support sports, no doubt in that and I am back to represent my team at Parliament and not only play for the parliament but also to make sure that I plan for sports. During my tenure in netball, I reached out to a number of MPs but they were fearing to talk about the injustices in the industry, so me who doesn’t fear any, here I am. “I am going to be the voice for sports, with netball I will be inviting you again and tell you our next step when it comes to netball.

The party was also graced by a lady professional golfer Eva Magala, a former president of the Uganda Ladies Golf Union, Moses Muhangi, president of Uganda Boxing Federation, players and officials from Netball, journalists and the other people.

Besides sports (talent promotion and advocacy), Hon. Babirye’s other key elements will entail ensuring that the people in Bukoto East have access to clean water, electricity, get the best use of the Government projects of government, good road system, health, education and a handsome payback to the local citizenry.

She will also front women empowerment, protection of the all vulnerable people in the community, agricultural promotion especially coffee and others.

Hon. Babirye is also a valuable asset to the Uganda Parliamentary Sports team as plays Netball, Volleyball, Basketball and Golf, and she is expected to add her voice to the sports development policies.

In 2024, Hon. Kityo won the Blueprint for Free Speech whistle-blowing Award winner that came as recognition for fighting corruption in the Ugandan sports sector.

Besides international recognition, Babirye also got a special plaque and cash prize £2000 (Ug.Shs 8,400,000).
