*A wide-reaching fraud investigation in South Florida has revealed a scheme that allegedly targeted food assistance benefits, affecting hundreds of residents and resulting in significant financial losses. Authorities say the case has exposed vulnerabilities in how aid funds were accessed and misused, CBS12 reports.
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, roughly 200 people were impacted by unauthorized withdrawals and purchases tied to stolen benefits. The investigation centers on benefits issued through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which are loaded onto Electronic Benefit Transfer cards. These EBT cards require a PIN for access, making them a frequent target for fraudulent activity when credentials are compromised.
Authorities say the case began after suspicious EBT activity was reported at a Walmart location in Cooper City on July 20, 2025. What started as a single complaint expanded into a broader inquiry involving more than 30 interviews and multiple identified victims across the region.
Investigators allege that Tamica Brown, 43, played a central role in organizing the scheme. She is accused of obtaining EBT card details and PIN numbers through illegal methods and it to access funds without authorization. Officials say the stolen data was transmitted to her electronically and used for a range of purchases. Total losses in the case have exceeded $120,000.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BSO) said in a statement: “The eight-month-long investigation revealed Brown, 43, operated an organized fraud scheme where she unlawfully obtained EBT card numbers belonging to SNAP recipients, associated PINs, and account balances from multiple sources. Evidence indicated that these card numbers were stolen by unknown means and transmitted to Brown electronically by way of phones.”
They added, “Investigators say, after receiving the stolen EBT information, Brown used the card numbers and PINs to conduct unauthorized transactions involving the purchase of high-demand items, including energy drinks such as Red Bull, Celsius, Monster and sports drinks such as Gatorade and soda.”
Many victims only became aware of the issue after attempting to use their cards and discovering their balances had already been depleted.
Brown was arrested earlier this month and she is being held at the Broward County Jail. “She is being held in the Broward County Main Jail on charges of trafficking in counterfeit credit cards (50 or more cards) and criminal use of personal identification information (over 30 victims),” per BSO.
