Jacobie sets school record, makes Commonwealth standard

USA-based high jumper Jenneil Jacobie became just the seventh athlete to make the Saint Lucia Athletics Association qualifying standards for this summer’s Commonwealth Games. The 21-year-old from Piat, Gros Islet, was the first field events competitor to make the grade, after clearing 1.87m to win her event on Friday, January 6, at the Charlie Thomas Invitational.

Jacobie, a senior at East Texas A&M University, needs to clear 1.82m or better at least twice more during the qualification period, which runs until May 31, to seal her passage to Glasgow 2026, which gets underway at the end of July. Since the beginning of the qualification period, only Julien Alfred and Marvric Pamphile have met the performance limits at least three times, as stipulated by the SLAA technical committee.

The winning mark by Jacobie on Friday at Fasken Indoor Facility in College Station, Texas, set a new ETAMU school record, and got her back into the top 10 in NCAA Division I, as well as vaulting her into the world top 50 for the first time in her young career. Her maiden foray over six feet also kept her atop the Southland Conference rankings and tied the meet record for the Charlie Thomas Invitational.

Also excelling at the weekend were Joy Edward and Natalie Albert, who took top spots in different meets. Edward, a University of Charleston senior, won the women’s shot put with 14.01m at the Marshall Jewel City Invitational. She threw 17.48m for second in weight throw. Albert, at the University of Memphis, topped the weight throw in 18.34m at the UAB Green and Gold Invite.
