THE death toll from the Kariba boat disaster has risen to 72 after police confirmed the recovery of three more bodies late Saturday.
The latest recoveries came hours after 22 bodies were recovered earlier Saturday, pushing the toll from 46 to 68.
“ZRP update as of 2000 hours tonight. The Kariba RIDA (Rural Infrastructure Development Agency) boat accident death toll is now 72 after the recovery of 3 more bodies late on the 15th of August 2026. Meanwhile, the identification of the bodies recovered today is in progress,” police said.
The boat sank last Tuesday on Lake Kariba after reportedly encountering strong winds and rough waters.
RIDA officials said the vessel, designed to carry 90 people was carrying 153 passengers, excluding crew, when it sank.
The tragedy has been declared a national disaster, with search and recovery operations continuing as authorities work to account for missing passengers and identify recovered bodies.
