At the heart of Black Pirates’ current success is Marvin Odong, a lanky former Rugby Cranes sweetheart, and now the Sea Robbers’ head coach.
Odong received the Best Home-Based Coach Award at the recently concluded Uganda Rugby Union Awards, and he has the trophies to back up the accolade.
Pirates came off a 2025 season in which they won the League and the Uganda Cup, with a below-par, but still decent, finish in the National 7s.
In 2026, the Pirates are head and shoulders above the rest in the Premiership and could be on course to defend their league title.
“The regular season has been okay. We had a blip earlier on in the season, and I’m glad that the boys were able to sort it out, so we’ve stabilised, and now it’s playoff rugby,” notes Odong.
It was never in doubt that the Pirates would make it to the quarterfinal playoffs, but it is how far they’ve gone in the Enterprise Cup that’s worth applauding.
“Unfortunately for us, our playoffs are going to be action-packed. We have an Enterprise Cup final, we have two quarterfinals against the team that we played last Saturday, and I expect that the next games are going to be extremely, extremely tough,” Odong says with caution.
Despite staring down a possible domestic treble, with the Enterprise Cup still to play for against Kabras Rugby of Kenya, Odong is still grounded and focused on the task at hand.
“The larger vision now is our next game. If we lose the next quarterfinal by 20 points, then we’re in trouble. So the goal is to stick to our process level indicators, ensure that we do the right things in every game, and that usually results in you winning the game,” Odong remarks.
Pirates have put up stellar performances in the regular season, thanks to the strength in depth within their ranks.
“I’m really proud of the larger squad. You know, it’s usually tough being in a very talented squad when you’re part of the larger squad. But I’m very glad with the guys who have been on the periphery, they’ve kept the work in, they’ve kept coming down here and training hard, and you can see the efforts are paying off,” Odong remarks with pride.
Additionally, Odong hopes his boys can continue doing the correct things if the Pirates are to win every competition they take part in this year.
