DOUG McCallum will be mayor of Surrey for the third time as Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke conceded defeat at around 9:40 p.m. when just over 65 per cent of Surrey votes had been counted.
McCallum of Safe Surrey Coalition had bagged 27,206 votes (32.94%) as compared to Brenda Locke’s 18,485 votes (22.38%).
A jubilant McCallum announced at his victory celebration that Mandeep Singh Nagra would be appointed deputy mayor.
At midnight, with all the votes counted, McCallum had garnered 42,741votes (31.94 %), while Brenda Locke had won 30,886 votes (23.08%) — a difference of 11,855 votes.
A convincing victory, indeed.
The turnout was 37.35 per cent.
Seven of the eight councillors will be from McCallum’s party.
Incidentally, McCallum’s victory did not come as a surprise to many Surrey-ites, especially South Asians. Former MLA Tony Bhullar told The VOICE 10 days ago that his sources had told him that McCallum was sure to win.
