Minister of Health and Wellness: “We are trying to attract medical professionals to come to Belize”

By Zoila Palma:  Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard says the Government continues to work to fill vacancies within the public health system, as Belize faces competition from the private sector for nurses and other medical professionals.

Bernard said the Ministry has been actively advertising available positions and encouraging professionals to join the public health system. “We do our very best to ensure we can fill the gaps,” he said.

The Minister acknowledged, however, that the Government may not have positions available for every medical professional entering the country, while noting that private healthcare providers are also seeking to recruit qualified staff.

Bernard said Government is also exploring opportunities beyond Belize to address the shortage of healthcare professionals. “We have been trying to tap into other countries,” he said, pointing to ongoing discussions with Honduras.

He explained that Belize is exploring an agreement with Honduras that could facilitate exchanges while also providing Belizeans with access to additional university opportunities in the region.

Bernard said the initiative could also help “attract medical professionals who can come to this country and work.”
