40 farmers participate in training to boost fruit production and farm income

By Zoila Palma:  The Belize District Department of Agriculture conducted its second round of technical training on September 3 in Ladyville, bringing together 40 farmers to strengthen fruit production and orchard management practices.

The training focused on high-potential fruit crops, particularly soursop and dragon fruit, with farmers receiving hands-on guidance from National Fruit Tree Coordinator Enrique Rivas and Ministry of Agriculture technician Israel Pech.

Farmers learned improved pruning and canopy management techniques, phytosanitary practices, and methods to stimulate flowering and fruit production. The training also included demonstrations on manual pollination and the identification of common pests and diseases affecting fruit trees.

The initiative is supported by the Climate Resilient Sustainable Agriculture Project (CRESAP), which continues to assist farmers in adopting climate-smart and resilient agricultural technologies.

The training forms part of the Ministry of Agriculture’s Fruit Tree Development Program, which aims to revitalize Belize’s fruit industry, increase farmer income and promote commercially and export-oriented crops.
