DAR ES SALAAM: THE National Environment Management Council (NEMC) is urging Tanzanians to prioritize environmental cleanliness and conservation in their communities to ensure a clean, safe and healthy environment.
Speaking to the media, NEMC Director General Dr Immaculate Semesi said environmental cleanliness should begin at the source by ensuring that waste is not disposed of indiscriminately but is instead separated according to its type, including biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.
She said the waste should then be placed in designated and appropriate areas for collection, recycling or safe disposal.
NEMC stressed that environmental conservation is the responsibility of everyone, from households and institutions to businesses, schools and public spaces.
The public has been urged to avoid activities that pollute the environment, including dumping waste in drainage systems, rivers, roads and other unauthorized areas.
Citizens have also been encouraged to actively participate in environmental cleanliness initiatives, reduce waste generation, reuse products whenever possible and take recyclable materials to appropriate collection points.
“Let us remember that a clean environment is the foundation of good health, community well-being and sustainable development. Everyone has a role and responsibility to ensure that the area where they live, work or conduct business remains clean and safe.
“Let us be part of the solution. Separate waste at the source, protect the environment and safeguard public health. A clean environment is our collective responsibility,” Dr Semesi said.
