National Council parliamentarians have raised concerns over poor road infrastructure, saying it contributes to vehicle damage, rising transport costs and road accidents.
The Ministry of Works and Transport’s budget was N$2.74 billion for the current financial year.
During the budget debate on Monday, parliamentarian Laurentius Mukoya said deteriorating roads, especially in the Kavango East and Kavango West regions, are affecting service delivery and damaging vehicles.
“Government vehicles across ministries are old and unreliable. Most vehicles are outdated and frequently break down,” he said.
Mukoya said the water directorate in the Kavango East region lacks trucks to transport water to inland communities, leaving some residents without reliable water supply due to poor roads and inadequate transport.
He urged the government to replace its ageing fleet and prioritise road upgrades.
Parliamentarian Herculus Jantze also backed the budget, but criticised delays in upgrading the Maltahöhe-Walvis Bay road in the Hardap region.
He said residents and transporters are forced to travel through Windhoek because of the poor condition of the existing road, leading to increased fuel and maintenance costs.
Jantze said upgrading the road would stimulate economic growth, improve access to markets, and create jobs and boost tourism at Maltahöhe and surrounding areas.
He said the route could also reduce traffic congestion along the B1 corridor for motorists travelling from southern Namibia and South Africa.
