A naked man was allegedly found inside the presidential residence at State House on Thursday afternoon in a security breach that has put police inspector general Joseph Shikongo’s job on the line.
Details on the incident come at a time when speculation that Shikongo has been fired is rife.
The police chief was granted a three-year contract extension by then-president Nangolo Mbumba in 2024.
His term was expected to end in September 2027.
Questions sent to the Presidency on the security breach were not answered this weekend, and Shikongo, who said he was out of town, said he has not received any notification of his dismissal.
The Namibian understands the breach happened shortly after 15h00 on Thursday. The man allegedly bypassed State House security and reached the president’s private floor.
Sources say no guards were on duty when the intruder entered the residence.
Once apprehended, the man allegedly said he was “sent” and threatened to “be back” once released from custody.
It’s unclear whether the man has been arrested.
Sources, however, blame the failure on the “incompetence” of the police and the presidential security detail.
The Presidency on Saturday said it was not aware of the president dismissing Shikongo.
“Nothing like that has come to my attention, and if there was, we would have issued a formal communication,” State House press secretary Jonas Mbambo said.
The incident took place days after Shikongo announced a reshuffle of senior commanders, including the head of presidential security, with effect from 1 May.
He transferred commissioner Julia Sakua-Neo from the Kavango West region to the Zambezi region as regional commander, and reassigned former presidential security chief commissioner Andreas Nelumbu to the Kavango West, also as regional commander.
Oshana regional commander commissioner Naftal Sakaria was appointed as the new presidential security chief.
