(AURN News) — In a new poll, 61% of voters planning to cast ballots Tuesday say the national debt will play a major role in their choice for federal office.
The poll was commissioned by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation and found similar results across party lines.
Voters are connecting Washington’s budget to their own budgets. The survey found that 92% of voters worry about the national debt’s effect on everyday prices. It also found that 88% worry about the national debt contributing to higher borrowing costs, from mortgages to credit cards.
Those numbers measure voters’ concerns, not how much of today’s prices or interest rates the debt actually explains.
The survey also finds nearly three-quarters would consider crossing party lines for a candidate with a clear debt plan.
Democratic and Republican polling firms conducted the online survey of 1,000 registered voters nationwide Oct. 19-21.
With Election Day approaching, what are candidates actually promising to do?
