NBC unveils strategy to deepen financial participation

DAR ES SALAAM: National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has launched a nationwide campaign, “Tunakuona Mbali,” aimed at expanding financial inclusion and increasing access to banking services for Tanzanians, particularly those living abroad, alongside other key customer segments.

The initiative seeks to strengthen engagement with Tanzanian diaspora communities while also targeting employees, farmers, women, youth, students, retirees, community groups and businesses. It combines financial education programmes with banking products designed to support saving, investment and access to financial services.

Speaking at the launch in Dar es Salaam over the weekend, NBC Head of Marketing David Raymond said the campaign is intended to help Tanzanians make greater use of financial tools to meet personal and business goals.

He said the initiative focuses on supporting customers seeking to buy homes, expand businesses, finance education, build savings and improve long-term financial security.

According to Raymond, banking services have evolved beyond traditional deposit-taking, with customers increasingly using accounts as platforms for payments, financing, investments and business transactions.

He said broader participation in formal financial services contributes to economic activity by supporting entrepreneurship, agricultural production, business expansion and household financial stability.

A key component of the campaign is NBC’s focus on Tanzanians living abroad. The bank is promoting diaspora banking products that enable overseas Tanzanians to invest in the country through home financing, fixed-term investments and other financial solutions.

NBC Product and Sales Manager Dorothea Mabonye said the campaign will include financial literacy programmes aimed at helping customers make informed decisions on saving, borrowing, investing and managing personal finances.

She noted that financial services play a wider role in economic planning and wealth creation, beyond serving as repositories for savings.

Mabonye said NBC offers products tailored to different customer groups, including youth, women, students, salaried workers, businesses and community organisations. These include savings, salary, business, investment and group accounts, among others.

She added that parents can use junior accounts to encourage saving among children, while salaried employees can access short-term financing to meet urgent financial needs.

The campaign will also highlight opportunities available to Tanzanians abroad, a segment increasingly viewed as an important source of investment and capital inflows. Through its diaspora banking services, NBC aims to facilitate financial participation by overseas Tanzanians seeking to invest and maintain financial links with the country.

NBC Head of Alternative Channels and Digital Transformations Ulrik Peter said digital technology remains central to improving access to financial services, particularly for customers located far from physical branches, including those outside Tanzania.

He said the bank continues to expand digital platforms such as NBC Kiganjani, NBC Connect, agency banking services and card-based solutions to enable customers to access banking services remotely.

According to Peter, digital banking helps reduce transaction costs, improve convenience and remove geographical barriers to financial services. He added that ongoing investments in digital infrastructure, including instant card issuance for new account holders, form part of the bank’s efforts to increase participation in formal banking channels.

Through the “Tunakuona Mbali” campaign, NBC is seeking to broaden access to financial services, strengthen engagement with diaspora communities and other customer groups, and increase financial literacy across the country.
