Two men killed after truck crashes into vehicles stopped near fallen tree on Hummingbird Highway

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police are investigating Wednesday’s deadly collision on the Hummingbird Highway in which two men were killed after a heavy-duty truck crashed into vehicles that had stopped near a fallen tree.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, Head of the National Crime Investigation Branch, identified the deceased during Monday’s police briefing as Irvin Gutierrez and Jaheed Lopez.

Romero said police responded between miles 51 and 52 of the Hummingbird Highway, where they found a truck overturned and four other vehicles damaged.

Investigators determined that several vehicles had stopped along the highway while persons worked to clear a tree that had fallen across the roadway.

According to Romero, the truck was travelling toward Belmopan and was unable to stop in time, colliding with the vehicles before overturning.

Gutierrez and Lopez were trapped beneath the truck and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Romero said police have recorded several statements and taken measurements as part of the investigation. A sample was obtained from the truck driver, who was also served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution.

The completed case file will be submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for directives.

Public reporting has confirmed that Lopez was among those who had stopped to help clear the fallen tree. He was also a footballer and University of Belize student who had recently received a sports scholarship.

The accident occurred near Armenia Village at around 4:30 p.m. and involved an 18-wheeler carrying sand and gravel.
