Buying art and doing good!? There’s a local exhibition and online sale running this month that directly supports emerging local artist printmakers.

Johannesburg, South Africa (10 April 2026) – Jozi’s renowned Artist Proof Studio is celebrating its 35th birthday with a special exhibition and online auction in partnership with Strauss & Co.

The online sale is already live and runs until 17 April, and every artwork sold goes directly towards APS’s education programmes, which helps emerging local artists carve out their spot in the art industry.

The exhibition brings together a mix of artists who’ve come through APS over the years, alongside up-and-coming names still building their careers.

The studio, for more than three decades, has focused on making quality art education accessible to young artists who might not otherwise have the opportunity. Each year, around 100 students take part in its programmes, where they gain both technical printmaking skills and the tools needed to work professionally as artists.

Experienced printmakers including APS’ co-founder Kim Berman, along with artists and art specialists such as Nathi Simelane and Wilhelm van Rensburg, guide and support artists through that process.

Every sale at the exhibition and online auction goes toward student bursaries and scholarships, keeps studio spaces open and stocked with materials, and helps sustain a proven, alternative arts education model that keeps on opening doors for young local artists.

Prints are also a win for the people buying them. Compared to other mediums, they are generally more affordable, which makes them a good entry point for new collectors. At the same time, because works are produced in editions, artists can earn across multiple sales which creates a more sustainable way to build an income.

If you want to see the work in person, the exhibition is open at Strauss & Co in Houghton on weekdays, running until 17 April. The online auction is running alongside it, so you can browse and bid from wherever you are.

There’s also a closing week walkabout on 15 April (16:00–17:30), where visitors can spend time with the work and hear directly from the people behind it to better understand the process, the thinking behind the pieces, and what it means to start collecting printmaking.
