Months after the tragic suicide of former Louisiana State University player Kyren Lacy, his lawyer dropped bombshell evidence seemingly clearing his client of criminal charges still haunting his name. But now, Louisiana State Police (LSP) have responded with their own collection of evidence that paints a much different story.
We previously told you Lacy was accused of reckless driving that caused a fatal crash back in December. The NFL prospect was arrested and charged with negligent homicide after a head-on collision killed a Louisiana man. News of his criminal charges derailed his football career, and ultimately led him to take his own life in April.
His lawyer, Matt Ory, promised to clear Lacy’s name, and last week, he shared investigation data from the crash that completely disputed claims that Lacy caused the accident. Days later, however, LSP hit back with findings of their own.
On Tuesday (Oct. 7), LSP released a statement. “Since the incident occurred, the Louisiana State Police never reported that the green Charger impacted any of the involved vehicles,” the department said. “However, all evidence collected supports the conclusion that Lacy’s reckless operation of the green Charger in oncoming traffic triggered the chain of events involving the other drivers, ultimately resulting in the fatal crash.”
The initial investigation determined Lacy, who was driving a green Dodge Charger heading southbound, illegally passed other vehicles. This led to a northbound truck spotting Lacy and breaking abruptly, police said. Consequently, the driver behind the truck swerved into incoming traffic and hit the deceased’s vehicle, killing him.
The new evidence from police included a full crash report, eyewitness statements and additional video. Surveillance footage from a local gas station showed Lacy’s Charger illegally passing four vehicles in a no-passing zone. LSP said he then “aggressively brake[d]” to reenter his correct lane just seconds before the crash happened.
Perhaps the most damning part of the LSP findings is one witness’ account of the matter. He told police the “green Charger caused all this,” referring to the crash. Lacy’s attorney has not responded yet to LSP’s new released evidence. The department has since doubled down on Lacy’s alleged guilt, however.
“LSP relied on proven methods from forensic analysis, crash reconstructions, and comprehensive evidence review to uncover the full truth,” police said on Tuesday. “While we recognize that external narratives may arise, often based on selective information, we urge the public to rely on the full body of facts.”
