Judge Mathis Opens up About Three-Week Split With Wife of 40 Years

Judge Greg Mathis and his wife, Linda Reese Mathis, share 40 years of marriage and four children. Although the couple has made many happy memories together, things haven’t always been easy for the pair. In August 2024, the Mathises were separated for three weeks before Linda filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.” This week, during a recent appearance on The Tamron Hall show, the Emmy award-winning TV judge and his wife opened up about their marital struggles and how the experience helped them learn about each other and find their way back together.

Judge Mathis admits his career put a burden on his marriage to Linda in the beginning, as his schedule often left her to do the heavy lifting at home while he was away. Linda told Hall that although being with their children was her joy, she got to a point where she realized she needed to prioritize herself.

“I supported him always. And, at that time, I felt I needed to just take care of me,” she said. “And that’s what I felt I was doing at that time.”

Judge Mathis said the split took a toll on him, adding that he hadn’t felt that kind of pain since his mother’s death.

“It felt like I did when I lost my mother. That’s the feeling I had. And I’d do anything to get my mother back,” he said.“So I did anything to get my wife back.”

Part of the process of getting their marriage back on track required the couple to do a lot of work to get to know each other again. Linda said that although the judge never left the house, the separation wasn’t easy. Now that they’ve done the work, Linda says she feels they are in a good place.

“We enjoyed our time doing that, each and every day, and it’s just been progressively, just great,” she said. “Every day has been just wonderful.”
