Roberto Sánchez in his role as singer Lone Ark and The 18th Parallel already made a strong impression back in 2021 with the release of Showcase Vol. 1. That album carried a rich roots flavour that felt timeless from start to finish. Now they return with a brand new single, Man Kill Man, released through the Fruits Records imprint. The release of this single also serves as the first glimpse into the upcoming Showcase Vol. 2.
Recorded on 2” tape between Switzerland and Spain, the project fully embraces the sound and spirit of classic mid-’70s reggae. Heavy drums, rolling basslines, crisp riddims, warm flute melodies, and carefully layered vocals all come together with that unmistakable analogue touch.
But the message at the heart of Man Kill Man is just as important as the music itself. The song speaks against wars and violence carried out under religious justification, a subject that sadly remains all too current across the world today.
Alongside Man Kill Man, they’ve also released Kanata, the instrumental version and companion piece to the vocal cut. Named after the Japanese word for “far beyond” or “a distant place,” the track introduces the solo debut of Japanese saxophonist Yuko Arakawa from ZIONHILL SESSION. The collective’s founder, Mr. Saito, also steps in with beautiful trombone work on the recording.
Yuko’s playing taps deep into the spirit of Nyahbinghi instrumental reggae. You can feel echoes of Count Ossie and Cedric ‘Im’ Brooks flowing through the track, while flashes of wild energy bring to mind the unmistakable touch of Sugar Belly. And on the dub side, Roberto Sánchez rounds things off with a deep Mutron Bi-Phase mix that stretches the tune into full smoky sound system territory.
