By Aaron Humes: Nine-year-old Vanessa Cal of Red Bank, Stann Creek District, did not survive a collision with a vehicle at an intersection in the village earlier today, despite appearing to have suffered no visible injury at first.
According to Police as detailed by Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith, “What we have learnt so far is that two detained individuals, being a male and a female were onboard an SUV driven by the female. It is alleged that upon reaching an intersection, the female driver observed young Vanessa on a bicycle travelling at a high speed. The female alleged that she sought to apply the brakes, [but] she mistakenly accelerated and collided into a fence. And Vanessa simultaneously collided into the car.”
The female driver told police, according to Smith, that the girl exhibited no visible injury and was responsive to her. She was taken to a nearby house, but about 10 minutes later, she was seen foaming at the mouth and was rushed to Independence Polyclinic, but died after treatment.
Both the driver and the passenger are being held by police pending further investigation.
