Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (Nored) employees have rejected the 3.5% salary increase the company offered them on Thursday, following a workers’ strike.
The employees say their demand for a 6% adjustment remains non-negotiable, along with a 14th cheque and better working conditions.
Nored supplies and manages electricity distribution in the Oshana, Oshikoto, Ohangwena, Kavango West and East, Omusati and Zambezi regions.
The Mineworkers’ Union of Namibia (MUN), which represents the employees, says the parties met on Friday to reach an agreement. During the meeting, Nored proposed a 3.5% increase, together with a 14th cheque.
“The employees rejected the proposal, which is just about a N$100 increase. The difference between the employer’s proposal and that of the union is big,” the union says.
The striking employees on Thursday said their salaries are too small to pay their bills, which has put them in debt.
The union says while the strike already has a significant impact, the company’s management carries the responsibility to resolve the deadlock by presenting a more reasonable offer.
“Union withdrew from the table. Employer to come back with a better proposal. The employees are ready to return to work,” the union says.
It has also raised concerns over alleged violations of strike rules and labour law, warning that it is considering legal action against Nored’s acting chief executive, Lucas Siremo.
