Mlolo Area Development Committee (ADC) chairperson Butao Butao, speaking on Monday after the training in Traditional Authority Mlolo in the district, said the training will help them monitor the progress of projects in the area.

He said: “The training will help us to monitor how CDF money will be utilised.

“Remember that we are taking about K5 billion here, which can be a game-changer only if we utilise it for its intended purpose. We need flagship projects which can change the face of our area with good roads, bridges, potable water systems and school blocks.”

On her part, Kalulu Ward councillor Georgina Elias (Democratic Progressive Party) said the project has allayed fears community members had that elected leaders will abuse the fund.

“People always suspect their leaders of abusing public resources. Therefore, we are pleased that the organisation is implementing an accountability project in the area,” she said.

Nsanje CSOs Network member Jayne Lipenga, who works with Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre, said apart from teaching local structures to monitor projects, they also shared with community members the new CDF guidelines.

Tiphedzane Community Support Organisation executive director Mike Dansa said it was their wish that stakeholders should know how CDF projects will be implemented.

He said: “We would love it if all stakeholders are aware of issues to do with how to identify contractors, understand bills of quantities, go through proper procedures of procurement and monitor projects up to the end.”
