Omaheke governor Pijoo Nganate has told government officials to use public healthcare facilities in the Omaheke region, since they have been upgraded.

Speaking during his state of region address on Monday, he said the facilities are clean and service delivery has improved.

“I’m going there for my medical treatment, and I want government officials to go test the facilities out,” he said.

He said the Ministry of Health and Social Services has maintained, renovated and rehabilitated healthcare infrastructure across the region to improve the safety and reliability of healthcare delivery.

Nganate said Gobabis District Hospital’s main entrance has been rehabilitated under a targeted budget of N$35 575, while N$14 914 was spent to develop and install washing lines and extensive glazing works at the facility.

“A new 350kVA back-up power generator has been installed and commissioned to the value of N$1.2 million, while essential electrical materials have been procured to stabilise the hospital,” he said.

Nganate said the ministry also spent N$397 424 on windows and repairing broken tiles, plumbing and interlocks at Epako Primary Health Care and the regional council.

“Minor renovations of the central ablution facility at Epako Clinic under an allocated budget line of N$ 347 013 have been completed and N$ 85 796 invested in upgrading critical sewer line system connected to the oxidation pond at Eiseb Primary Health Care,” he said.

The governor said an amount of N$102 193 was allocated to the renovation of the doctor’s flat at Otjinene Healthcare Centre, and an additional N$46 449 was spent on the emergency removal and replacement of a damaged sewer line as well as unblocking the main manhole at Epukiro Primary Healthcare Clinic.

The ministry also appointed 92 staff members, including medical officers, pharmacists, registered nurses, environmental health practitioners, social workers, technical personnel, and support staff to strengthen human resource capacity.

“The ministry supported seven health professionals pursuing specialised careers in health promotion, clinical diagnosis, nursing science, emergency nursing care and pediatric nursing,” Nganate said.

Despite the achievements, he said 34 of 53 hospital vehicles in the region remain grounded due to inadequate funding for repairs and tyre replacements.

The ministry uses private ambulance services when necessary, collaborates with government garages, and continues to advocate for a 52-seater bus to transport referral patients safely to Windhoek to address the transport gaps, he said.
