(AURN News) — On this day 25 years ago, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks devastated the United States.
On Sept. 11, 2001, hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C., while a fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed, including office workers, first responders, airline passengers and crew members. The attacks remain one of the deadliest acts of terrorism in American history and changed the country forever.
In the aftermath, the United States launched the war in Afghanistan, expanded surveillance and security through measures including the Patriot Act and entered a broader “War on Terror.”
The post-9/11 era also helped create the political climate for the controversial Iraq War, despite Iraq not carrying out the attacks.
Twenty-five years later, America remembers the victims, survivors, families and first responders.
