Peace, wealth creation to dominate Museveni’s State of the Nation Address

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is set to deliver the State of the Nation Address at Kololo Independence Grounds as he prepares to begin his seventh term in office.

Museveni, who earlier this year won the presidential election, defeated seven challengers, including Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform, Elton Joseph Mabirizi of the Conservative Party, and Robert Kasibante of the National Peasants Party.

The address comes at a time when government has already approved the Shs84.39 trillion ($22.65 billion) national budget for the 2026/27 financial year. Of this, Shs44.18 trillion is expected to be raised from domestic revenue, while a significant portion—about Shs33.4 trillion—has been allocated to debt servicing.

In his address, Museveni is expected to highlight peace and stability as Uganda’s biggest achievement, crediting it for enabling economic activity, social development, and improved livelihoods.

He is also expected to emphasize continued investment in infrastructure, particularly in roads, electricity, and ICT, which government considers critical for economic transformation. Expansion of tarmacked roads and electricity connectivity is seen as key to supporting industrialisation and trade.

The President is likely to reiterate government’s focus on wealth creation at the household level, urging citizens—especially the youth—to engage in income-generating activities. He has consistently pointed to programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) as central to lifting Ugandans out of subsistence.

Commercial agriculture is also expected to feature prominently, with Museveni encouraging farmers to adopt enterprise selection and modern practices to boost productivity and incomes.

In the industrial sector, the President is expected to cite progress in local manufacturing and value addition, noting that Uganda is gradually reducing dependence on imports while expanding exports.

On regional trade, Museveni is likely to underscore the importance of integration, saying Uganda continues to benefit from markets within the East African Community, despite persistent challenges such as non-tariff barriers.

The address is also expected to touch on social services, including improvements in education and health, while calling for greater efficiency and accountability to ensure services reach ordinary citizens.

Security will remain a key theme, with Museveni expected to affirm that Uganda is stable internally, even as he warns of regional threats and calls for continued vigilance by security agencies.

He is also expected to pay tribute to prominent Ugandans who have passed away over the past year, recognizing their contribution to national development.

Looking ahead, Museveni is expected to call for discipline, hard work, and patriotism, urging citizens to take advantage of government programmes to improve their socio-economic conditions.
