Star Saint Lucian forward Donavan Gusto Phillip got his goalscoring mojo back for the first time in five games on Sunday, November 23, to guide the North Carolina State Wolfpack men’s soccer team into the NCAA Championship Sweet 16. The Pack beat Marshall 2-0 at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh.

Phillip opened up the scoring with a goal in just the second minute. A corner-kick, served by Riley Moloney, was initially deflected by the Thundering Herd goalkeeper, but the young man from Marchand was able to head it in.

It was the 16th goal of the season for Phillip, the most by a Wolfpack player since 1991. That performance also puts him in the top 10 for goals in a season for his school. Only five NC State players have ever scored more in a season, dating back to 1961. Sam Okpodu scored 29 in 1982.

In the 59th minute, Moloney then found the back of the net himself when his corner-kick attempt deflected off the keeper into the net by the back post. Moloney, a defender, was just named to the All-ACC Freshman team a couple of weeks ago.

NC State will now host UNC Greensboro on Sunday, November 30, after UNCG beat No. 2 seed Virginia over the weekend. The Wolfpack previously met with the Spartans this season in Raleigh, resulting in a 1-1 tie in October. Six of the 16 seeded teams have already been knocked out of the tournament.
