By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño says no decision has been made on whether Belmopan Area Representative Oscar Mira will return to his former ministerial duties.
Asked Wednesday about Mira’s possible return, Briceño said reporters were “jumping ahead,” noting that Mira continues to serve as the elected representative for Belmopan and remains active in his constituency.
Mira stepped aside from Cabinet duties on June 22 amid the fallout from the so-called “Mira Millions” scandal while the Auditor General conducts an audit into procurement processes connected to a period when he served at the Ministry of Defence. The Government said at the time that the audit was expected to take approximately three months. Julius Espat was subsequently appointed Acting Minister of Home Affairs while retaining the Infrastructure Development and Housing portfolio.
Briceño did not indicate Wednesday whether Mira would automatically return to Cabinet once the audit is completed, saying only that it was premature to speculate on the matter.
