His Excellency President Adama Barrow has presented D1.5 million to 15 women’s groups in the North Bank Region through the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare’s Women Enterprise Fund.
The cheque presentation took place at the Mbamori Kunda general meeting in the North Bank Region on Friday, 2 October 2026, during President Barrow’s Meet the People’s Tour.
According to information released on the initiative, the funding is intended to strengthen women’s economic participation by providing financial support to groups engaged in small-scale businesses and other income-generating activities.
The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, Hon. Fatou Kinteh, said the Women’s Enterprise Fund continues to serve as an important government programme for expanding women’s participation in economic activities across the country.
She said each of the 15 beneficiary groups will receive financial assistance aimed at supporting their enterprises, improving livelihoods and strengthening economic resilience within their communities.
Minister Kinteh further said the Fund has already provided thousands of Gambian women with start-up capital, training and business development opportunities.
Women’s economic empowerment has remained part of the government’s broader stated development agenda. In previous official statements, the government has said its programmes seek to increase women’s participation in economic activities and expand opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises.
The latest presentation in the North Bank Region forms part of continuing efforts by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare to provide women’s groups with access to financing and enterprise support.
The 15 beneficiary groups are expected to use the funds to strengthen their existing businesses or develop new income-generating ventures within their respective communities.
