Regional Scouting Initiative Strengthens Foundation for Growth in A&B

The Antigua and Barbuda Scout Association (ABSA) is building on the momentum generated by its recent Adults in Scouting Engagement Initiative, held from July 16–19, 2026, in partnership with the Interamerican Scout Region of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) under the Strengthening Scouting in the Caribbean Project.

The four-day regional engagement brought together Scout leaders, volunteers, community stakeholders, and regional consultants to develop practical strategies aimed at strengthening volunteer recruitment, enhancing leadership development, expanding community partnerships, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of Scouting in Antigua and Barbuda.

As part of the programme, regional consultants Mark Ainsley John and Julian Nicolás Rairán Henao paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Governor General and Chief Scout of Antigua and Barbuda. They were joined by Dr. Fitzmore Burns, Chairperson ABSA, and Patricia Salmon, Chief Commissioner, for discussions focused on the future growth of the Movement and increasing opportunities for young people across the nation.

Reflecting on the engagement, Chief Commissioner Salmon described the visit as a valuable catalyst for the Association’s ongoing development.

“The engagement with the Interamerican Scout Region provided our Association with practical strategies and renewed energy as we continue to strengthen Scouting in Antigua and Barbuda. We are already moving forward with plans to increase adult volunteer recruitment, build stronger community partnerships, and further develop the leadership capacity within our Association. The knowledge and support shared during the visit will have a lasting impact on our Movement.”

According to the release, one of the most visible highlights of the engagement was the Community Recruitment and Outreach Exposition held on Redcliffe Street on July 18. Scout Groups from across Antigua showcased Scouting’s programmes, values, and opportunities for young people and adult volunteers. The event attracted residents, parents, former Scouts, and prospective volunteers, generating increased public awareness and interest in the movement.

Throughout the four-day programme, participants also took part in information sessions for prospective volunteers, meetings with representatives from the business community and civic organizations to explore strategic partnerships, and interactive workshops for Commissioners and Scout leaders focused on volunteer recruitment, leadership development, organizational sustainability, and strategic growth.

Chairperson Dr Fitzmore Burns noted that the engagement has laid the groundwork for the Association’s next phase of development.

“The regional initiative reaffirmed that Scouting continues to play a vital role in youth development. We are grateful to the Interamerican Scout Region for its partnership and expertise, and we remain committed to implementing the recommendations that emerged from the engagement as we continue to grow and strengthen the Movement.”

The Antigua and Barbuda Scout Association extends its sincere appreciation to the Interamerican Scout Region facilitation team for their continued commitment to strengthening Scouting throughout the Caribbean.

As the Association moves forward with implementing the outcomes of the engagement, it continues to welcome former Scouts, parents, educators, professionals, community leaders, and organizations interested in making a positive difference in the lives of young people. Adults with a passion for youth development are encouraged to volunteer with a local Scout Group or partner with the Association in support of its programmes.
