Edward Jack raced clear of 1700 runners to win the Langa Run 4 Freedom 10km race through the streets of Langa in Cape Town in celebration of the country’s Freedom Day.

One of the form sub-marathon athletes in the province, Jack, proved too strong for his rivals, racing the twists and turns through the historic urban township at speed to break the 30 minute barrier and cross the line at the Langa Sports Grounds in 29 min 37 sec.

Nedbank veteran, Elme Middelmost, was first female athlete home, winning in 39:29 ahead of Edgemead’s Obertina Kanyongo.

Totalsports VOB athlete, Sive Bhebha, finished fourth and was first junior in 31:40 with Bonteheuwel’s Mugwigvi Lywe outsprinting Ashanti Titus of Elsies to win the women’s junior contest by one second in 53:13.

Elsies River, led by Lott, showed impressive depth to win the men’s team competition, with Ashleigh Hartogh leading her club, Pinelands, neighbours to Langa, to victory in the women’s competition.

Western Cape runners have the opportunity to complete two 10km races within six days. Following the flat terrain around Langa, runners will find the UCT Memorial 10km, which starts and finishes on the university’s middle campus on Sunday, somewhat more testing.
