Somachi Chris-Asoluka is a Nigerian economist, development strategist, and philanthropy executive serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), Africa’s leading philanthropic institution dedicated to empowering entrepreneurs across all 54 African countries. Since assuming the role in 2023, she has led one of the continent’s most influential entrepreneurship platforms, overseeing initiatives that identify, train, mentor, fund, and connect thousands of African entrepreneurs while advancing the Foundation’s mission of transforming Africa through entrepreneurship.

An accomplished economist with an exceptional academic record, Somachi graduated Summa Cum Laude from Saint Mary’s College of California, earning a Bachelor of Science in Economics with a minor in Mathematics. She received the prestigious Adam Smith Award, presented to the highest-performing graduating student in Economics. She later earned a Master’s degree in International and Development Economics from Yale University, equipping her with the expertise that has defined her career in economic development, policy, and entrepreneurship across Africa.
Somachi joined the Tony Elumelu Foundation in 2014 and steadily rose through the organisation, serving as Head of Research, Head of Policy and External Relations, and later Director of Partnerships and Communications before being appointed Chief Executive Officer. Throughout her leadership journey, she has played a pivotal role in building strategic partnerships with institutions including the European Union, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), African Development Bank (AfDB), Google, GIZ, USADF, and numerous global development organisations. These collaborations have enabled the Foundation to expand its reach and deepen its impact on entrepreneurship across the continent.
Under her leadership, the Tony Elumelu Foundation has continued to strengthen its position as Africa’s foremost entrepreneurship philanthropy. Through the TEF Entrepreneurship Programme and TEFConnect, Africa’s largest digital entrepreneurship ecosystem, the Foundation has trained more than 1.5 million young Africans, provided nearly US$100 million in seed capital to over 18,000 entrepreneurs, and helped create more than 400,000 direct and indirect jobs across the continent. Her strategic leadership has further expanded the Foundation’s influence through partnerships that continue to unlock opportunities for African innovators and business leaders.

Beyond her executive responsibilities, Somachi is widely respected as a global advocate for inclusive economic development and women’s leadership. She serves as a Deputy Champion of the World Economic Forum’s EDISON Alliance, sits on the Advisory Board of the Michigan State University Alliance for African Partnership, serves as a Board Director and Treasurer of WINGS, the global philanthropy network spanning more than 50 countries, and is Co-Chair of UNICEF Generation Unlimited Nigeria (GenU 9JA). She was also appointed to Nigeria’s Presidential High-Level Advisory Council on Support to Women and Girls, reflecting her growing influence in shaping development policy and social impact initiatives.

Her professional affiliations further underscore her commitment to excellence. Somachi is a member of the Financial Women’s Association in San Francisco, Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international economics honor society, and a Fellow of the Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa, an organisation that identifies and nurtures some of Africa’s most promising female leaders. In 2018, she was recognised among the Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD), a United Nations-supported global initiative celebrating outstanding leaders of African heritage.
Today, Somachi Chris-Asoluka stands among Africa’s leading voices in entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and economic development. Through visionary leadership, strategic partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to empowering young entrepreneurs, she continues to advance the Tony Elumelu Foundation’s mission of creating shared prosperity across Africa. Her journey exemplifies how exceptional leadership, academic excellence, and purposeful service can drive meaningful transformation for millions across the continent.
